WHAT IS A STAGED READING?
A staged reading is live theatre stripped to its purest form — actors bring the play to life through voice, expression, and presence, scripts in hand, with no sets or costumes to distract. The story lives in the words, and the audience's imagination does the rest.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
Now and Then opens in a neighborhood bar in 1981, as Jamie, a young bartender and aspiring musician, is closing up for the night. A frantic stranger arrives — at first, all he wants is a quick drink. But then he makes an offer that Jamie finds too good to turn down: $2,000 if he'll let the man sit at the bar for an hour. What unfolds is anything but ordinary.
As a younger couple looks ahead to their future and an older one contemplates the past, playwright Sean Grennan explores the myriad decisions — the small ones and the big ones — that forge the course of a life. Hopes, regrets, dreams, loss, and love in its many manifestations all come into play, alongside that big, inevitable question: what if I had chosen differently?
Balancing humor with heart, this four-person ensemble play is a reflection on the choices we make — and who we make them with. Premiered in 2018 at the Peninsula Players Theatre in Wisconsin, Now and Then has since been produced internationally and become one of the most beloved new plays in the American community theatre repertoire.
